On our recent trip to the Bahamas, we learned that this Caribbean hot spot has a lot of entertainment-related focus. We’re not just referring to the media circus surrounding the death of Anna Nicole Smith, who ironically chose this sanctuary as a hideaway. Many other entertainment industry elites, from Tiger Woods to Sean Connery, also find comfort camouflaging themselves in the coves of the Bahamas. The warm climate, first-class amenities, accessibility, and diverse culture make it an ideal destination for filmmaking of any capacity. Less than an hour by plane from Florida, Nassau (the capital) is located on New Providence Island, the most populated of the 700 or so islands that make up the Bahamas. The first underwater silent film, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, was shot in Nassau in 1915. Word spread and producers have been returning to the Bahamas ever since. Several big budget productions, such as the famous Pirates of the Caribbean II and III and numerous James Bond films dating as far back as 1965 have found this to be the locale of choice, as did the recent television show Live with Regis & Kelly. But commercials, still photography catalogue shoots, documentaries, underwater photography shoots and music videos continue to be the Bahamian staple. Countless productions requiring underwater shooting have chosen the Bahamas, now known as the "underwater film capital of the world.” The diving conditions are widely recognized as some of the best in the world, boasting diverse underwater marine life, shallow reefs to depths of 6,000 feet, consistent conditions, and high visibility. But the main claim to fame, however, is the fact that they can virtually always guarantee sharks, which we experienced first-hand with the Stuart Cove’s diving crew. Swimming with sharks is something we never imagined doing in our wildest dreams but here we are, safe and sound, boasting of our adventure. Kudos to their amazing crew! Stuart Cove’s Underwater Productions is one of the most sought-after and experienced companies in the world. Recent credits for features range from Into the Blue to documentaries for the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. The owner and founder has every reason to claim that his seasoned and accommodating staff will go out of their way to make your Bahamas shoot run as smooth as possible, “With one call, we can help you arrange everything you need to complete a location marine shoot. We have the support services, talent and equipment to make everything happen. We will also act as your liaison to government and coordinate customs clearances upon request.”
