NEW MEXICO

With its aggressive and generous tax incentives, New Mexico has seen huge growth in studio and stage space. Albuquerque-based Rio Grande Studios has had a busy year. At the same time, the state’s newest facility, Albuquerque Studios has also seen a lot of production. “We now have six stages up and rented, and we have two more that’ll be done June 1, which are also rented,” reports Albuquerque Studios COO Nick Smerigan. “We also have NBC/Universal Lighting and Grip based at the studio, and they’re in the process of doing a deal with Home Depot to provide expendables, so we’re all very excited about that. Our other big news is that the new Terminator film is shooting here, which is a very big deal for us. They put together the best crew I’ve ever seen assembled. We also have some other big projects coming here soon, which we can’t announce yet, so business is just booming.”

U.K.

Stages in the U.K. have long accommodated everything from the biggest sets for the James Bond and Harry Potter franchises to the smallest art house films. Director Roger Donaldson, whose credits include No Way Out, Thirteen Days and Dante’s Peak, shot his new thriller The Bank Job on location in London and on stages at both Ealing Studios and Pinewood Studios. “I’ve worked at studios all over the world, and the priorities are always the same: space and quiet,” he reports. “Both Ealing and Pinewood are world-class facilities that offer the filmmaker whatever you need, including some of the most experienced crews anywhere. They also have such great history to them and that all adds to the appeal of shooting there.”
