Earlier this year, Hudson Capital added to their recent purchase of Sunset Gower Studios by acquiring KTLA/Tribune Studios. The acquisition makes Hudson Capital the largest owner of independent production studios in California. Tribune Studios, the original home of Warner Bros. ─ now renamed Sunset Bronson Studios ─ is comprised of 12 state-of-the-art production facilities and over 230,000 square feet of production office space. The studio offers 11 digital sound stages that house television productions like KTLA Channel 5, Disney’s Hannah Montana, Judge Judy, Judge Joe Brown, and Family Feud. It joins Sunset Gower Studios, the original home of Columbia Pictures, to offer a combined 23 soundstages. In 2001, the property was updated to provide 100 percent digital recording facilities and a high-definition television-capable infrastructure for the production and preproduction of television, film, and new media projects. Throughout history, KTLA/Tribune had a prime location on Sunset Boulevard between Bronson and Van Ness, which made it ideal for showcasing some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, such as John Barrymore, Clara Bow, Al Jolson, and James Cagney ─ just to name a few. The historic executive office building that fronts the Sunset Boulevard corridor was featured as the Tara Mansion in the film Gone with the Wind, and served as executive offices for Gene Autry, the “Singing Cowboy” and television innovator, who owned the studio from 1965 until 1982. The studios have an expert staff of stage managers, skilled trade people, and other key operations personnel who are experienced with all types of production. George NeJame, senior vice president and general manager of the two facilities, has had over 25 years of entertainment industry experience and has worked in every facet of production, ranging from stagehand to facilities manager and producer. Terri Melkonian, vice president of marketing and sales for both studios, worked in television production and arrived at Sunset Gower in 2006 after a 10-year stint at Universal Studios. Together, the two studios amount to 28 acres, 262,457 square feet of stages, and 570,425 square feet of office and support. Since 1922, the two studios combined have produced 1,165 feature films (50 of which were Oscar® winning films) and 375 television shows (65 of which were Emmy-winning). Recent and current production activity on the Gower lot include: Heroes, Dexter, October Road, and HBO’s Tell Me You Love Me; features include: Alvin & the Chipmunks and The Ugly Truth; and many commercials. The studios plan to have a grand opening in July for the most technically-advanced postproduction facility in the world, operated by Technicolor. |
