The Los Angeles City Council met recently to find ways to attract and retain filming in the city. The Jobs and Business Development Committee meeting focused on the economic impact of film, television and commercial production in Los Angeles. Councilmember Richard Alarcón spearheaded strategies to tackle “runaway” production: production running away from the L.A. area. “Today, we made a strong statement that filming is a priority in Los Angeles and the direction that came out of the hearing is a clear indication of the aggressive agenda we will be pursuing to make it easier to film in Los Angeles,” said Alarcón. Alarcón offered 17 specific recommendations to promote the city's filming efforts. The committee also heard from several film professionals and leading authorities on this matter. Jack Kyser of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation spoke about the economic downturn and its impact on filming. Kyser expects approximately 6,000 fewer jobs for film industry employees this year. Others who spoke at the meeting about the challenges facing L.A., included Paul Audley, President of FilmL.A., Executive VP of Production at 20th Century Fox Television Jim Sharp, Business Manager for Teamsters Local 399 Ed Duffy, David Phelps of Government Relations at AICP and Deputy National Executive Director of the Screen Actors Guild Pamm Fair. |
